Job Description

  • The Financial Controller is responsible for all aspects of financial accounting and reporting internally and externally. The role coordinates reporting activities across the function, ensuring compliance with technical as well as group standards and policies
  • Full accountability for the delivery of the monthly reporting and accounting close out
  • Responsible for the processes and controls governing the 'record to report', 'purchase to pay' and 'sell to receive' end to end processes
  • The role delivers insightful financial data and analysis for senior management supporting decision making for a complex and investment intensive business, ensuring safe operation and maximising financial returns of the business.



The Financial Controller will provide inspirational and performance leadership to the finance team. This is a significant part of the role as is supporting the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in embedding a high performance and safety led culture.Primary Activities

  • Set standards for financial reporting
  • Deliver the financial accounting and reporting activities for the business
  • Oversee, review and improve financial reporting
  • Own the business narrative and ensure this is reflected in all reporting
  • Analyse complex financial reports and records to deliver insight and accountability for business performance
  • Management of the balance sheet and cashflow, including reviewing all balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries and payment runs
  • Accountable for the completion and timely sign off by Directors of accurate, complete statutory accounts for companies ensuring compliance with FRS101
  • Creating a strong control environment, well documented and ensuring continued monitoring and compliance. Collaborate with the Business Risk and Controls team to identify risks and apply strong controls to mitigate identified risk.
  • Manage the group and statutory accounts external audits and be key point of contact for internal financial audits
  • Responsible for the preparation of the Board meeting pack and papers, co-ordinating deliveries from all areas of the business ensuring complete, accurate, timely and insightful information presented to the directors
  • Work closely with the Head of Commercial Finance team to support short and long term planning, reforecasting and strategic review and impairment review processes
  • Provide leadership to the finance team
  • Developing the team by finding and developing talented people (recruit the right people, develop them to be the best they can be, plan for knowledge retention and resilience within the team), improving reporting (Finance team providing information to improve leadership of the business), getting the basics right (accurate numbers, sufficient controls to drive business improvements) and improving efficiencies (work smarter not harder)



The Successful Applicant

  • Financial accounting and reporting experience
  • Financial modelling experience
  • Experience of leading/managing a team
  • Experience/understanding of trading environment desirable
  • Experience with SAP systems is desirable
  • Qualified accountant ACA / CIMA / ACCA
  • Proven people management experience, developing high performance and engagement
  • Ability to communicate effectively and explain complex ideas in simple terms with Finance and non-Finance staff
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with non-Finance staff to ensure an excellent relationship with Finance is maintained and rapport developed
  • Production of clear and concise written reports for senior management
  • Self-starter who is able to work independently but also know when to ask for support
  • Able to manage multiple deliverables and support others in the team as needed
  • Advanced Microsoft Office Skills: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Financial accounting and reporting experience essential
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with an understanding of company financial information and accounts
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills
