Job Description

The key responsibilities of the Financial Controller will be to:

  • Develop, maintain and monitor a directory of accounting procedures and controls across the Finance Department with a view to embedding best practice including reconciliation of balance sheet accounts;
  • Assist the Finance Director in the preparation of Eton College's consolidated Statutory accounts, including the review of the subsidiary trading company management and statutory accounts as prepared by the Assistant Financial Accountant;
  • Play a key role in the year end audit process including preparation of audit schedules as needed;
  • Prepare the College's Restricted Funds and Trusts Accounts for inclusion in the statutory accounts;
  • Be the main point of contact in the Finance Department for the Development (Fund-Raising) Department and any other Committees where Restricted Funds are applied for their purposes;
  • Management and sign-off of monthly Gift Aid claims;
  • Management of investment accounting for both securities and property portfolios;
  • Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns for Eton College group VAT registration which are the subject of a partial-exemption special method;
  • Line management of the Financial Accounts Team;
  • Reviewing and checking the teams work;
  • Regular 1:1s (at least every other week);
  • Ensuring all their training and development needs are met;
  • Commitment and promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion;
  • All positions at Eton are classed as 'regulated activity' as per the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023 guidance, therefore a good understanding of safeguarding procedures is essential;
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including by not limited to, completing safeguarding training as required, and ensuring any safeguarding updates issued by the College are read and understood;
  • Understand and comply with procedures and legislation relating to confidentiality.

The Successful Applicant

The successful Financial Controller will:

  • Be a fully qualified Accountant with extensive post-qualified experience;
  • Have demonstrable experience of operating robust control environments;
  • Have experience of being accountable for month end and year end processes including statutory accounts and audit delivery;
  • Have working knowledge of VAT, ideally including business/non-business and partial exemption;
  • Have excellent analytical skills with the ability to question and interrogate financial information;
  • Have strong IT skills (advanced excel and word)

  • You are a tactful and diplomatic communicator, both orally and written, with a collaborative approach;
  • You are comfortable in dealing with people at all levels;
  • You are willing to deliver department wide training where required
